✧ ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān had a doorkeeper, who would go out before him to prayer. One day he went out and prayed with the doorkeeper before him. Then he came and the doorkeeper sat to one side, wrapped his cloak and placed it under his head, lay down, and put the whip before him. ʿAlī came wearing a waist-wrapper and a cloak, with a staff in his hand. When the doorkeeper saw him from afar, he said, “This is ʿAlī coming.” ʿUthmān sat up, drew his cloak over himself, and ʿAlī came and stood at his head and said, “You bought the estate of the family of so-and-so, and the waqf of the Messenger of God ﷺ has a right in its water. I knew that no one but you would buy it.” ʿUthmān stood up and words passed between them that I will not repeat until I meet God. Al-ʿAbbās came and intervened, and ʿUthmān raised the whip against ʿAlī, and ʿAlī raised the staff against ʿUthmān. Al-ʿAbbās began calming them, saying to ʿAlī, “The Commander of the Faithful,” and to ʿUthmān, “Your cousin.” He continued until they calmed down. Then on the evening of the next day, I saw them, each holding the other’s hand, conversing.
