حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَى، نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْأَزْدِيُّ الْإِصْطَخْرِيُّ، نَا الْكَرْمَانِيُّ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الْفَرَّاءُ، عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ، مَوْلَى عَلِيٍّ قَالَ:
شَهِدْتُ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ، النَّهَرَ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ قَتْلِهِمْ قَالَ: " اطْلُبُوا الْمُخْدَجَ، فَطَلَبُوهُ، فَلَمْ يَجِدُوهُ، وَأَمَرَ أَنْ يُوضَعَ عَلَى كُلِّ قَتِيلٍ قَصَبَةٌ، فَوَجَدُوهُ فِي وَهْدَةٍ فِي مُسْتَنْقَعِ مَاءٍ، رَجُلٌ أَسْوَدُ، مُنْتِنُ الرِّيحِ، فِي مَوْضِعِ يَدِهِ كَهَيْئَةِ الثَّدْيِ، عَلَيْهِ شَعَرَاتٌ، فَلَمَّا نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ قَالَ: " صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ "، فَسَمِعَ أَحَدُ ابْنَيْهِ - يَعْنِي: الْحَسَنَ أَوِ الْحُسَيْنَ - يَقُولُ: الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي أَرَاحَ أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْعِصَابَةِ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ: " لَوْ لَمْ يُبْقَ مِنْ أُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ إِلَّا ثَلَاثَةٌ لَكَانَ أَحَدُهُمْ عَلَى رَأْيِ هَؤُلَاءِ، إِنَّهُمْ لَفِي أَصْلَابِ الرِّجَالِ وَأَرْحَامِ النِّسَاءِ

✧ I witnessed with 'Ali the battle of the Nahrawan. When he finished killing them, he said: 'Search for the mukhaddaj.' They searched for him but did not find him. He ordered that a reed be placed on every corpse. They found him in a hollow in a pool of water—a black man, foul-smelling, in the place of whose hand was something like a breast, with hairs on it. When he looked at him, he said: 'Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth.' One of his two sons—meaning al-Hasan or al-Husayn—was heard saying: 'Praise be to Allah, who has given rest to the ummah of Muhammad ﷺ from this band.' 'Ali said: 'If only three of the ummah of Muhammad ﷺ remained, one of them would be upon the opinion of these. They are in the loins of men and the wombs of women.'
