حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَى، نَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ، نَا عِصْمَةُ بْنُ الْمُتَوَكِّلِ، نَا أَبُو يُوسُفَ الْقَاضِي، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ:
وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَا قَعَدْتُ خَلْفَ سَرِيَّةٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَبَدًا، وَلَكِنْ لَا أَجِدُ مَا أَحْمِلُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ، وَلَا يَجِدُونَ سَعَةً فَيَتْبَعُونِي، وَلَا يَطِيبُ أَنْفُسُهُمْ أَنْ يَقْعُدُوا بَعْدِي

✧ By the One in whose hand is my soul, were it not that I would make it difficult for the believers, I would never stay behind any expedition in the path of Allah. But I do not find what to mount them on, and they do not find the means to follow me, and it would not please their souls to stay behind after me.
