حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبَانَ، نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، ثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ الْبَاهِلِيَّ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ:

إِنَّ اللهَ فَرَضَ عَلَيْكُمْ صَوْمَ رَمَضَانَ، وَلَمْ يَفْرِضْ عَلَيْكُمْ قِيَامَهُ، وَإِنَّمَا قِيَامُهُ شَيْءٌ أَحْدَثْتُمُوهُ فَدُومُوا عَلَيْهِ، فَإِنَّ نَاسًا مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ ابْتَدَعُوا بِدْعَةً فَعَابَهُمُ اللهُ بِتَرْكِهَا، وَقَالَ: وَرَهْبَانِيَّةً ابْتَدَعُوهَا مَا كَتَبْنَاهَا عَلَيْهِمْ إِلا ابْتِغَاءَ رِضْوَانِ اللهِ فَمَا رَعَوْهَا حَقَّ رِعَايَتِهَا - إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ.

✧ Allah has obligated upon you the fast of Ramadan, but He has not obligated its night prayer. Its night prayer is something you have introduced, so persist in it. For some people among the Children of Israel innovated an innovation, and Allah criticized them for abandoning it. He said: 'And monasticism, which they innovated; We did not prescribe it upon them except seeking the pleasure of Allah, but they did not observe it with due observance'—until the end of the verse.
