✧ He was ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Samurah; his name was ‘Abd al-Kallub, and the Messenger of God ﷺ named him ‘Abd al-Rahman. He passed by him while he was performing ablution, and he said, “Come, O ‘Abd al-Rahman.” The Prophet of God ﷺ said to him: Do not seek positions of authority, for if you seek it and are given it, you will be left to it; but if you do not seek it, you will be helped in it.

machine translationIn al-Awsaṭ, as a mursal report, via Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh b. Kaysān, and he is weak (ḍaʿīf).

machine translationIn this report ʿIkrimah did not state explicitly that he took it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, but it is possible. al-Ṭabarānī said: "None narrated it from ʿIkrimah except ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Kaysān, and none narrated it from him except his son Isḥāq; Abū al-Dardāʾ ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Munayb was alone in narrating it." I say: ʿAbdullāh b. Kaysān was graded weak (ḍaʿīf) by Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī, and his son Isḥāq was described as soft (layyin) by Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim.
