حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ بْنِ سَهْلٍ الْبَزَّارُ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ قَالَ: ثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الْكِنْدِيُّ الْقَاضِي قَالَ: نَا الْجَهْمُ بْنُ وَاقِدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ حَبِيبَ بْنَ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، يَقُولُ:
أَتَيْتُ عَبْدَ خَيْرٍ الْهَمْدَانِيَّ وَكَانَ أَمِيرَ شُرْطَةِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، فَلَمَّا دَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا وَصَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ، وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ، وَقَالَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا ؟ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَخَيْرُهُمْ بَعْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ: عُمَرُ، وَالثَّالِثُ لَوْ شِئْتُ أَنْ أُسَمِّيَهُ لَسَمَّيْتُهُ

✧ I came to 'Abd Khayr al-Hamdani, who was the chief of the guards of 'Ali b. Abi Talib. When I entered upon him, he said: "I heard 'Ali ascend the pulpit, praise Allah, extol Him, and say: 'O people, shall I not inform you of the best of this community after its Prophet? Abu Bakr, and the best of them after Abu Bakr is 'Umar, and the third, if I wished to name him, I would name him.'"
