حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي خَيْثَمَةَ قَالَ: ثَنَا ابْنُ يَحْيَى الضَّرِيرُ قَالَ: نَا شَبَابَةُ بْنُ سَوَّارٍ قَالَ: نَا الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ، عَنْ حُطَيْمٍ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ قَالَ:
كُنْتُ أَفْزَعُ بِاللَّيْلِ، فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، فَقُلْتُ: إِنِّي أَفْزَعُ بِاللَّيْلِ فَآخُذُ سَيْفِي، فَلَا أَلْقَى شَيْئًا إِلَّا ضَرَبْتُهُ بِسَيْفِي، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَاتٍ عَلَّمَنِي الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ ؟ فَقُلْتُ: بَلَى. فَقَالَ: قُلْ: أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ الَّتِي لَا يُجَاوِزُهُنَّ بَرٌّ وَلَا فَاجِرٌ، مِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَنْزِلُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ، وَمَا يَعْرُجُ فِيهَا، وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتَنِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ طَارِقٍ إِلَّا طَارِقٌ يَطْرُقُ بِخَيْرٍ، يَا رَحْمَنُ، فَقَالَهَا، فَذَهَبَتْ عَنْهُ

✧ I used to be terrified at night, so I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "I am terrified at night, so I take my sword, and I do not encounter anything but that I strike it with my sword." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Shall I not teach you words that the Trustworthy Spirit taught me?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Say: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither righteous nor wicked can transgress, from the evil of what descends from the sky and what ascends therein, and from the evil of the trials of night and day, and from every night-visitor except one who visits with good, O Most Merciful.'" So he said them, and it left him.
