✧ They traveled with the Messenger of God ﷺ on the day of Hunayn, and they sped up the march until it was evening. The prayer became due at the Messenger of God ﷺ, when a horseman came and said: 'O Messenger of God, I went ahead of you all until I climbed such-and-such a mountain, and there I found Hawazin with their camels, their women in howdahs, their livestock, and their sheep, gathered at Hunayn.' The Messenger of God ﷺ smiled and said: 'Those are the spoils of the Muslims all together, if God wills.' Then he said: 'Who will be our guard tonight?' Anas b. Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi said: 'I will, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'Mount.' So he mounted a horse of his and came to the Messenger of God. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: 'Face this mountain pass until you are at its highest point, and we must not be caught off guard from your direction tonight.' When morning came, the Messenger of God ﷺ went out to his prayer place and prayed two rak'ahs, then said: 'Have you sensed your horseman?' A man said: 'O Messenger of God, we have not sensed him.' The call to prayer was given, and the Messenger of God ﷺ, while in prayer, kept turning toward the pass. When he finished his prayer and said the salutation, he said: 'Rejoice, for your horseman has come to you.' We began looking through the gaps in the trees in the pass, and there he was, coming until he stood before the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: 'I went until I was at the highest point of this pass, where the Messenger of God ﷺ commanded me. When morning came, I ascended both sides of the pass and looked, but I saw no one.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'You have done well, and there is no blame on you for what you do after this.'
