✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb wrote to Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ: “I want to divide the black land of Kufa among the Muslims who conquered it.” Saʿd wrote back to him: “O Commander of the Faithful, we have conquered a people whom Allah created with the softest hearts, the most generous souls, the greatest blessing, and the most open-handed. Their hands are food and their tongues are peace. If you see fit, O Commander of the Faithful, not to disperse them or divide them, and not to turn us away from the direction through which Allah granted us victory, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: ‘The might of the Arabs is in the points of their spears and the hooves of their horses.’”
