حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الرَّازِيُّ قَالَ: نَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ الْهَيْثَمِ الْمُؤَدِّبُ قَالَ: نَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَعْلَى بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ: نَا بَكْرُ بْنُ وَائِلٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ قَالَ:

أُخْبِرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنِّي قُلْتُ: لَأَقُومَنَّ اللَّيْلَ، وَلَأَصُومَنَّ النَّهَارَ مَا عِشْتُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: أَنْتَ الَّذِي قُلْتَ: وَاللهِ لَأَصُومَنَّ النَّهَارَ، وَلَأَقُومَنَّ اللَّيْلَ مَا عِشْتُ ؟ قُلْتُ: قَدْ قُلْتُهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. قَالَ: " فَإِنَّكَ لَا تُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ، فَصَلِّ وَنَمْ، وَصُمْ وَأَفْطِرْ، وَصُمْ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ، فَإِنَّ الْحَسَنَةَ بِعَشْرِ أَمْثَالِهَا، ذَلِكَ مِثْلُ صِيَامِ الدَّهْرِ "، قُلْتُ: إِنِّي أُطِيقُ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، قَالَ: " فَصُمْ يَوْمًا، وَأَفْطِرْ يَوْمَيْنِ "، قُلْتُ: إِنِّي أُطِيقُ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " صُمْ يَوْمًا، وَأَفْطِرْ يَوْمًا، وَذَلِكَ صِيَامُ دَاوُدَ، وَهُوَ أَعْدَلُ الصِّيَامِ "، قُلْتُ: إِنِّي أُطِيقُ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " لَا أَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ was told that I said: I will stand in prayer at night and fast during the day as long as I live. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Are you the one who said: By God, I will fast during the day and stand at night as long as I live?" I said: I said it, O Messenger of God. He said: "You cannot do that. Pray and sleep, fast and break your fast. Fast three days of every month, for a good deed is multiplied tenfold, and that is like fasting forever." I said: I can do better than that. He said: "Then fast one day and break fast two days." I said: I can do better than that. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Fast one day and break fast one day; that is the fast of David, and it is the most moderate fasting." I said: I can do better than that. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "There is nothing better than that."
