✧ That his father had sent him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on an errand. He said: I found him sitting with his companions in the mosque, and I was not able to speak to him. When he prayed Maghrib, he stood praying voluntary rakʿahs until the muezzin called the adhan for ʿIsha’ and the people gathered. Then he prayed the obligatory prayer and stood praying voluntary rakʿahs until those who remained in the mosque left. Then he went to his home, and I followed him. When he heard my footsteps, he said, “Who is this?” and turned toward me. I said, “Ibn ʿAbbas.” He said, “The cousin of the Messenger of Allah?” I said, “The cousin of the Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Welcome to the cousin of the Messenger of Allah. What brings you?” I said, “My father sent me with such-and-such.” He said, “Have you just come?” I said, “No.” He said, “Since you have not left at this hour of yours, you will not leave.” Then he entered his house and I entered with him. I said to myself: I will certainly observe the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ tonight. He slept until I heard his snoring, then woke up and cast his eyes to the sky and recited these verses from Surat Al ʿImran: “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth…” the five verses, until he reached “…indeed, You do not break Your promise.” Then he said: “O Allah, place in my hearing light, and in my sight light, and above me light, and below me light, and on my right light, and on my left light, and grant me light with You.” Beside him was a small basin of brass with a cover on which there was a siwak. He used the siwak, then performed ablution, then prayed two rakʿahs. Then he went back and slept again until I heard his snoring, then woke up and recited the verses and made the supplication, then used the siwak, then performed ablution, then prayed two rakʿahs. Then he slept until I heard his snoring, then woke up and recited the verses, then made the supplication, then used the siwak, then performed ablution, then prayed two rakʿahs. Then he slept until I heard his snoring, then woke up and recited the verses and made the supplication, then used the siwak, then performed ablution, then prayed a prayer in which I knew he was performing Witr. Then he said, “Has the boy slept?” I said, “No.” I got up and performed ablution, then came and stood at his left side. He took hold of my ears with his two fingers and turned me around until he placed me on his right side. Then he prayed the two rakʿahs of Fajr, then went out for the prayer.
