✧ Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Umar b. al-Khattab, and some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat together after the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and discussed the greatest of major sins, but they had no knowledge about it. So they sent me to Abdullah b. Amr b. al-As to ask him about that. He informed me that the greatest of major sins is drinking wine. I came back and told them, but they rejected that and all of them went to him. He told them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A king of the Children of Israel seized a man and gave him the choice of drinking wine, killing a child, committing adultery, eating pork, or being killed if he refused. He chose to drink wine, and when he drank it, he did not refrain from anything they wanted from him.' And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us at that time: 'No one drinks it but that his prayer is not accepted for forty nights, and he will not die with any of it in his bladder except that Paradise is forbidden to him. And if he dies within the forty days, he dies a death of Jahiliyyah.'
