حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ أَبِي حَسَّانَ الْأَنْمَاطِيُّ، قَالَ: نَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ: نَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ، قَالَ: نَا غَالِبٌ الْقَطَّانُ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْمُزَنِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ:

كُنَّا نَقُولُ لِقَاتِلِ الْمُؤْمِنِ إِذَا مَاتَ: إِنَّهُ فِي النَّارِ، وَنَقُولُ لِمَنْ أَصَابَ كَبِيرَةً فَمَاتَ عَلَيْهَا: إِنَّهُ فِي النَّارِ، حَتَّى أَنْزَلَ اللهُ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ: إِنَّ اللهَ لا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ

✧ We used to say of the killer of a believer when he died: ‘He is in the Fire,’ and we used to say of one who committed a major sin and died upon it: ‘He is in the Fire,’ until Allah revealed this verse: Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives what is less than that.
