✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed one of the two afternoon prayers and prayed two rak'ahs, then said the salam. He went to a piece of wood placed across the mosque, and the people hurried out of the mosque, saying, 'The prayer has been shortened.' Among the people were Abu Bakr and 'Umar, but they were hesitant to speak to him. Among the people was a man called Dhu al-Yadayn, who said, 'O Messenger of Allah, did you forget or has the prayer been shortened?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I did not forget, nor has the prayer been shortened.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Is it as Dhu al-Yadayn says?' They said, 'Yes.' So he came and prayed what remained of his prayer, then said the salam, then said the takbir and prostrated like his prostration or longer, then raised his head, then said the takbir and prostrated like his prostration or longer. It was said to him, 'Did he [finally] say the salam?' He said, 'I was informed that 'Imran b. Husayn said: He said the salam.'

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr
