✧ I was commanded to fight the people until they say: 'There is no god but Allah.' Whoever says: 'There is no god but Allah' has protected his wealth and his life from me, except for its right, and their reckoning is upon Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed in His Book—then he mentioned that some people were arrogant, and He said: 'When it was said to them, "There is no god but Allah," they were arrogant.' And He, Mighty and Majestic, said: 'When those who disbelieved harbored in their hearts the zealotry of the Age of Ignorance, Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and made them adhere to the word of piety, and they were more deserving of it and its people.' That is: 'There is no god but Allah.'

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Among those who narrated it from him correctly are Shuʿayb b. Abī Ḥamzah, Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, Muḥammad b. al-Walīd al-Zubaydī, Yūnus, ʿUqayl, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Khālid b. Musāfir, al-Nuʿmān b. Rāshid, Sufyān b. Ḥusayn, Sulaymān b. Kathīr, Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, Jaʿfar b. Burqān and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd b. Tamīm. They narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUtbah, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: ʿUmar said to Abū Bakr. There is disagreement about Sufyān b. Ḥusayn: Muḥammad b. Yazīd al-Wāsiṭī narrated it from him as connected (musnad), from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh, from Abū Hurayrah, while Yazīd b. Hārūn narrated it as mursal, omitting Abū Hurayrah. Maʿmar b. Rāshid also narrated it, and there is disagreement about him: Rabāḥ b. Zayd narrated it as connected from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh, from Abū Hurayrah, in agreement with those mentioned before, but ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated it as mursal from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh, without mentioning Abū Hurayrah. ʿImrān al-Qaṭṭān narrated it from Maʿmar and said: from al-Zuhrī, from Anas b. Mālik, from Abū Bakr, and he erred in this regarding Maʿmar. Yaḥyā b. Abī Unaysah narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, and he also erred in mentioning Saʿīd. Ṣāliḥ b. Abī al-Akhḍar narrated it and said: from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd and Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah. Al-Walīd b. Muslim narrated it from Shuʿayb, and Marzūq b. Abī al-Hudhayl and Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah, and he erred in this regarding Shuʿayb and Ibn ʿUyaynah, because Shuʿayb narrates it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh, from Abū Hurayrah, and Ibn ʿUyaynah narrates it from al-Zuhrī as mursal, mentioning no one above him. The first view is the correct one.
