حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ هَارُونَ بْنَ إِسْحَاقَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ الْقَنَّادَ يَقُولُ:

مَرَّ سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَلَى أَسَدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ، فَكَأَنَّ أَسَدًا لَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ، فَرَجَعَ سُفْيَانُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَسَدُ، أَمُرُّ عَلَيْكَ، فَأُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ، فَلَا تَرُدُّ فَاعْتَذَرَ إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِي شُغْلٍ، فَكَأَنَّ سُفْيَانَ لَمْ يَقْنَعْ مِنْهُ بِذَلِكَ. فَقَالَ لَهُ أَسَدٌ: " يَا سُفْيَانُ، مَا بَلَغَ مِنْ قَدْرِكَ أَنْ أَكُونَ أَعْلَمَ مِنَ اللهِ غَيْرَ مَا تَعْلَمُ

Translation

✧ Sufyān al-Thawrī passed by Asad b. ʿUbaydah and greeted him, but Asad seemed not to return the greeting. Sufyān went back to him and said: “O Asad, I passed by you, greeted you, and you did not return it.” Asad excused himself by saying he had been busy, but Sufyān seemed not to accept that from him. Then Asad said to him: “O Sufyān, has your standing reached the point that I should know something from Allah that you do not know?”
