✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ visited me during an illness I had, and I said: “O Messenger of God, I have no one but a daughter of mine; shall I bequeath all my wealth in the way of God?” He said: “A third, and a third is much. If you leave your heirs wealthy it is better than leaving them destitute, begging people with their hands. You will not spend any expenditure seeking thereby the face of God except that you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you raise to your wife's mouth. Perhaps God will raise you and benefit people through you and harm others through you.” Then he said: “O God, complete the emigration of my companions.” But the wretched Saʿd b. Khawla—the Messenger of God ﷺ mourned for him that he died in Makkah.

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from him. Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm also narrated it, and there is disagreement about him concerning it: al-Thawrī narrated it from Saʿd, from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father; and Misʿar said, from Saʿd: "Some of the family of Saʿd narrated to me, from Saʿd." And it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father, through the narration of al-Zuhrī and through the narration of Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm.
