وأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ كَامِلٍ الْقَاضِي، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سَلَامٍ، حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيَّ،
يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِمُسْلِمِ بْنِ سَيَّارٍ: عَلِّمْنِي كَلِمَةً تَجْمَعُ لِي مَوْعِظَةً نَافِعَةً قَالَ: " فَأَطْرَقَ طَوِيلًا "، ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ: " لَا تُرِدْ بِعَمَلِكَ غَيْرَ مَنْ يَمْلِكُ ضَرَّكَ وَنَفْعَكَ " قَالَ: زِدْنِي، قَالَ: " أَجْمِلْ رَجَاءَكَ وَلَا تَسْتَعْمِلْهُ، وَاسْتَشْعِرِ الْخَوْفَ وَلَا تُغْفِلْهُ " قَالَ: زِدْنِي قَالَ: " يَوْمَ الْعَرْضِ عَلَى رَبِّكَ لَا تَنْسَهُ " قَالَ: ثُمَّ سَقَطَ لِوَجْهِهِ مُكْفًا
