Chain of narrators

machine translationAbū ʿAbdillāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us: ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā b. Ibrāhīm narrated to me: Abū Yaḥyā Zakariyyā b. Dāwūd al-Khaffāf narrated to us: Aḥmad b. al-Khalīl al-Baghdādī narrated to me in Nīsābūr: Yaḥyā b. Ayyūb narrated to me

Machine translation, not reviewed

He said: I entered with Zāfir b. Sulaymān upon al-Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ in Kufa, and there was al-Fuḍayl with an old man beside him. He said: Zāfir entered and sat me down at the door. Zāfir said: Al-Fuḍayl began looking at me, then said: "O Abū Sulaymān, these are the people of ḥadīth; nothing is dearer to them than a short chain of transmission. Shall I not tell you of a chain about which there is no doubt? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, from Jibrīl, peace be upon him, from Allah: {a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are angels, harsh and severe} [al-Taḥrīm: 6]" He recited the verse, "and you and I, O Abū Sulaymān, are among the people." He said: Then he fainted, and so did the old man, and Zāfir kept looking at the two of them. He said: Then al-Fuḍayl stirred, so Zāfir went out and I went out with him, while the old man was still unconscious.
