He says: I said to one of the worshippers: What is it that wearies the worshippers and makes them most fearful? He said: Remembering the standing before God and fearing the reckoning. Then he said to me: O Abū al-Ḥasan, why would the bodies of the worshippers, the ascetics and the servants not melt away in terror, when the Resurrection is before them, and for them on that Day is what they already know? Then he cried out a cry that frightened me. Then he said: O Abū al-Ḥasan, who will be for me in that standing place, and who will be for my regret, my enjoyment, my hunger and my thirst? Then he said: Leave me, O Abū al-Ḥasan, for you have stirred in me what was still and brought out of me a hidden grief. Then he cried out and said: "Alas, how long is that standing! Alas, my regret! Alas, how heavy is my back from carrying sins, wrongs, errors and the filth of faults!" Then he said: Alas for carrying them! Alas for remembering them! Alas for their weight! Alas for my confessing them against myself! Then he said "to God we belong and to Him we return," and said: My Master, where is Your beautiful, powerful covering, my Master? Where is Your forbearance, my Master? Where is Your pardon, my Master? Where is Your bounty, on which Your servants rely, my Master? So rescue me, and by Your mercy keep me safe. Then he wept and made us weep with him, and I left him weeping, grieving, with a wounded heart, and I departed from him.
