He said: Yaḥyā b. Abī Ṭālib said: ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. ʿAṭāʾ narrated to us, he said: ʿImrān b. Ḥudayr informed us, he said: They said to ʿIkrimah: "Ibn ʿUmar would not enter the shops until he asked permission." He said: "And who can bear what Ibn ʿUmar used to do? Ibn ʿUmar would not wear a garment with a cross on it." ʿAbd al-Wahhāb said: meaning a garment with a cross in it. "And he used to leave himself hungry, and he would come to his family and call for food, and it would be set out, and he would say: Eat, for I am fasting." "And this indicates that ʿIkrimah did not hold that permission must be asked from the people of the shops, and to this view went al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī and Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī. It is as though the people of the shops only opened them and sat in them for people to come to them for buying and selling, so that stood in the place of permission, while Ibn ʿUmar was cautious and so would ask permission."
