That he heard Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī say: We were sitting in a gathering with Ubayy b. Kaʿb, when Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī came angry until he stood, and said: I adjure you by God, did any of you hear the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "Asking permission is three times; if you are given permission, (enter), and if not, then go back"? Ubayy said: What is that about? He said: I asked permission to see ʿUmar yesterday three times and was not given permission, so I went back. Then I came to him today and entered upon him, and told him that I had come to him yesterday and given the greeting three times and then left. He said: We heard you, but we were busy at the time; why did you not keep asking until you were given permission? He said: I asked permission as I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ (instruct). He said: You must bring someone who will testify for you to this. Ubayy said: By God, none will stand with you except the youngest of us, the one beside you. Get up, Abū Saʿīd. So I got up and went to ʿUmar, and said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say this. This is the wording of the hadith of Ibn al-Muqriʾ.
