أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، أبنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ، أبنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، أبنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أبنا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ،
قَالَ: كَانَ ابْنُ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ يَشْتَكِي، فَخَرَجَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ فَقُبِضَ الصَّبِيُّ، فَلَمَّا رَجَعَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ قَالَ: مَا فَعَلَ ابْنِي؟ قَالَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ: هُوَ أَسْكَنُ مَا كَانَ، فَقَرَّبَتْ إِلَيْهِ الْعِشَاءَ، فَتَعَشَّى ثُمَّ أَصَابَ مِنْهَا، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْهَا، قَالَتْ: وَارُوا الصَّبِيَّ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَخْبَرَهُ، فَقَالَ: " أَعْرَسْتُمُ اللَّيْلَةَ "؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: " اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمَا "، فَوَلَدَتْ غُلَامًا، فَقَالَ لِي أَبُو طَلْحَةَ: احْمِلْهُ حَتَّى نَأْتِيَ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، وَبَعَثَتْ مَعَهُ تَمَرَاتٍ، فَأَخَذَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: " أَمَعَهُ شَيْءٌ "؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، تَمَرَاتٌ، فَأَخَذَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَمَضَغَهَا، ثُمَّ أَخَذَهَا مِنْ فِيهِ فَجَعَلَهَا فِي فِي الصَّبِيِّ، ثُمَّ حَنَّكَهُ وَسَمَّاهُ عَبْدَ اللهِ " أَخْرَجَاهُ فِي الصَّحِيحِ،

Then she gave birth to a boy. Abū Ṭalḥah said to me: "Carry him until we bring him to the Prophet ﷺ," and she sent some dates with him. The Prophet ﷺ took him and said: "Is there anything with him?" They said: "Yes, some dates." The Prophet ﷺ took them and chewed them, then took them out of his mouth and put them into the mouth of the boy, then rubbed his palate with it and named him ʿAbdullāh." Both of them (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) recorded it in the Ṣaḥīḥ.

In all of this is an indication that the dating in the ḥadīth of Samurah would seem to refer to the naming, and Allah knows best. There are Sunnahs and reports concerning the ʿaqīqah, and likewise concerning naming the newborn and giving him a kunyah. We have mentioned them in the Book of the ʿAqīqah in Kitāb al-Sunan, and repeating them here would be burdensome, so I left them out for brevity; whoever wants them may refer to them, if Allah wills.
