He said: A man bought a house in al-Madāʾin, and Salmān al-Fārisī passed through al-Madāʾin while he was governor. The man took Salmān to be a foreigner (ʿilj) and said: "O so-and-so, come here." So Salmān came, and he said: "Carry this." He carried it and went on with it. People began to meet him, saying: "May Allah set the governor right, we will carry it for you," and "O Abū ʿAbdillāh, we will carry it for you; Abū ʿAbdillāh, we will carry it for you." The man said: "May my mother be bereaved of me and lose me! I found no one to press into service except the governor." He said: So he began to apologize to him, saying: "Abū ʿAbdillāh, I did not recognize you, may Allah have mercy on you." He said: "Go on." So he went on with it until he reached his house. Then he called him and said: "Do not press anyone into forced service after me, ever."
