وَبِإِسْنَادِهِ: نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ، عَنْ جَامِعِ بْنِ شَدَّادٍ،
قَالَ: كُنْتُ عِنْدَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْفَارِسِيِّ، فَأَتَاهُ نَعْيُ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، فَأَتَيْنَاهُ نُعَزِّيهِ، فَقَالَ: مَاتَ أَخِي الْأَسْوَدُ ثُمَّ قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: " يَذْهَبُ الصَّالِحُونَ أَسْلَافًا وَيَبْقَى أَصْحَابُ الرِّيَبِ " قَالُوا: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: وَمَا أَصْحَابُ الرِّيَبِ؟ قَالَ: " قَوْمٌ لَا يَأْمُرُونَ بِمَعْرُوفٍ، وَلَا يُنْهَوْنَ عَنْ مُنْكَرٍ "

He said: I was with ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd al-Fārisī when news of the death of al-Aswad b. Yazīd reached him. We came to offer him condolences, and he said: "My brother al-Aswad has died." Then he said: ʿAbdullāh said: "The righteous depart as predecessors, and the people of doubts remain." They said: "O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who are the people of doubts?" He said: "A people who do not enjoin the right, and do not forbid the wrong."
