He said: Waḥshī came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Muḥammad, I have come to you seeking your protection." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I had wished to see you without protection, but since you are seeking protection, you are under my protection until you hear the word of Allah, the Exalted." He said: "I associated partners with Allah the Almighty, and I killed the soul which Allah has forbidden. Is repentance accepted from someone like me?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was silent and did not answer him until the Qur'an was revealed to him: {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ} [al-Furqān: 68] up to His words {يُبَدِّلُ اللهُ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ حَسَنَاتٍ} [al-Furqān: 70], the verse. He recited it to him. He said: "I see a condition, and perhaps I will not do righteous deeds. I am under your protection until I hear the word of Allah." He called him and recited it to him. Waḥshī said: "Perhaps I am among those whom Allah does not will to forgive. I am under your protection until I hear the word of Allah." He said: Then was revealed: {يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللهِ} [al-Zumar: 53], the verse. Waḥshī said: "Now I do not see any condition." So he testified to the faith and became Muslim.
