He said: While I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed an offense requiring a prescribed punishment (ḥadd), so carry it out on me." He said: He turned away from him. Then the man returned and said the same, and the prayer was called. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered and prayed, then came out. He said: Abū Umāmah narrated to me, saying: I was walking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while the man was following him, saying: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed an offense requiring a prescribed punishment (ḥadd), so carry it out." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Did you not leave your house, perform ablution and do the ablution well?" He said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "And did you attend this prayer with us?" He said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Then Allah has forgiven you your ḥadd," or he said: "your sin." This is the wording of the hadith of Ibn ʿAbdān. Muslim recorded it in the Ṣaḥīḥ by another route, from ʿIkrimah b. ʿAmmār.
