أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، أَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي الدُّنْيَا، ثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، ثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ
قَالَ: " كَانَ يُخْبَزُ لِدَاوُدَ الطَّائِيِّ سِتُّونَ رَغِيفًا يُعَلِّقُهَا بِشَرِيطٍ، يُفْطِرُ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ، عَلَى رَغِيفَيْنِ بِمِلْحٍ وَمَاءٍ، فَأَخَذَ لَيْلَةً، فِطْرَهُ، فَجَعَلَ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ قَالَ: وَمَوْلَاةٌ لَهُ سَوْدَاءُ تَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَامَتْ فَجَاءَتْ، بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ تَمْرٍ عَلَى طَبَقٍ، فَأَفْطَرَ، وَأَصْبَحَ صَائِمًا، فَلَمَّا أَنْ جَاءَ وَقْتُ الْإِفْطَارِ، أَخَذَ رَغِيفَهُ وَمِلْحًا وَمَاءً، قَالَ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ: حَدَّثَنِي جَارٌ لَهُ قَالَ: جَعَلْتُ أَسْمَعُهُ يُعَاتِبُ نَفْسَهُ، وَيَقُولُ: اشْتَهَيْتِ الْبَارِحَةَ تَمْرًا، فَأَطْعَمْتُكِ، وَاشْتَهَيْتِ اللَّيْلَةَ تَمْرًا، لَا ذَاقَ دَاوُدُ تَمْرًا، مَا دَامَ فِي دَارِ الدُّنْيَا "

She got up and came with some dates on a plate, so he broke his fast with them, and in the morning he was fasting. When the time for breaking the fast came, he took his loaf, salt and water. Al-Walīd b. ʿUqbah said: A neighbor of his narrated to me, saying: I kept hearing him rebuke himself and say: You desired dates last night, so I fed you; and you desire dates tonight? Dāwūd will not taste dates as long as he is in this worldly abode."
