He said: ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit said: "Do you not see me as I am? I cannot stand except when I am helped up, and I eat only what has been softened for me, and my companion has been dead for a long time. And I would not like to have all that the sun rises upon, while I were alone with a woman who is not lawful for me, for fear that it would stir, even though it has no hearing and no sight." His saying: "except when I am helped up" means: except when I am assisted to stand until I rise. And his saying: "except what has been softened for me" means: except food that has been made soft for me until it becomes like butter in softness, because of old age. And his saying: "my companion has died" and "it has no hearing and no sight" means the private part, that it is unable to do anything and does not know anything. He says: and despite this, I dislike to be alone with a woman. This was said by Abū ʿUbaydah, in what al-Sulamī informed me, (he said) al-Kārizī informed us, (he said) ʿAlī b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz informed us, from Abū ʿUbaydah.
