Chain of narrators

machine translationAbū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us, he said: I heard Abū al-Walīd say: I heard al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān say: Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm al-Dawraqī narrated to us, he said: Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd narrated to us, from Shuʿbah,

He said: "Among people are those whose intellect is in their courtyard, and among them are those whose intellect is with them, and among them are those who have no intellect. As for the intelligent one whose intellect is with him, he is the one who sees what will come out of him before he speaks; and as for the one whose intellect is in his courtyard, he is the one who sees what came out of him after he has spoken." He said: So I related it to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī, and he said: "This is our description - meaning the one whose intellect is in his courtyard - and he found the saying excellent." Then he said: "This is not from the words of Shuʿbah; he heard it from someone else."
