He said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (may God be pleased with him) was asked about standing at the mountain, and why it is not within the Ḥaram. He said: "Because the Kaʿbah is the House of God and the Ḥaram is the door of God. So when they came to Him as delegations, He made them stand at the door, humbling themselves." It was said: O Commander of the Believers, what of the standing at the Mashʿar? He said: "Because when He permitted them to enter, He made them stand at the second veil, which is Muzdalifah. Then when their humble entreaty grew long, He permitted them to offer their sacrifice at Minā. Then when they had completed their rites and offered their sacrifice, and were purified by it from the sins they had, He permitted them to come to Him in a state of purity." It was said: O Commander of the Believers, then why is fasting on the days of Tashrīq forbidden? He said: "Because the people are visitors of God and they are in His hospitality, and it is not permissible for a guest to fast without the permission of the one who hosts him." It was said: O Commander of the Believers, then for what meaning does a man cling to the coverings of the Kaʿbah? He said: "It is like a man who has committed an offense against his companion, so he clings to his garment, approaches him and seeks his favor, so that he will forgive him his offense."
