The Prophet ﷺ said: "Begging is but scratches with which a man scratches his own face. So whoever wishes may keep his face unscarred, and whoever wishes may leave it, except that a man asks one in authority, or asks in a matter for which he finds no alternative." He said: So I narrated it to al-Ḥajjāj, and he said: "I am one in authority, so ask me."
