He said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, have you benefited Abū Ṭālib in any way? For he used to protect you and become angry on your behalf." He said: "Yes. He is in a shallow part of the Fire, and had it not been for me, he would have been in the lowest depth of the Fire."

machine translationAl-Bukhārī narrated it in the Ṣaḥīḥ, from Mūsā b. Ismāʿīl, from Abū ʿAwānah. Muslim narrated it from Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr and Ibn Abī al-Shawārib. Al-Bayhaqī, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "Some have held that the good deeds of the disbeliever are not weighed so that he be rewarded for them with a lightening of punishment, but they are weighed only to cut off his argument, so that when disbelief is set against them it outweighs them and nullifies them; or they are not weighed at all, but his disbelief, or his disbelief and the rest of his evil deeds, is placed in one of the two pans of the scale. Then it is said to him: Do you have any act of obedience that we may place in the other pan? He finds none, so the scale grows heavy, the empty pan rises, and the occupied pan remains. That is the lightness of his scale. As for his good deeds, nothing of them is counted along with disbelief. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: {وَقَدِمْنَا إِلَى مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ هَبَاءً مَنْثُورًا} [al-Furqān: 23]." We have narrated from ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that she said: "O Messenger of Allah, Ibn Judʿān used to maintain family ties in the Jāhiliyyah and feed the poor. Will that benefit him?" He said: "It will not benefit him, because he never said one day: My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgement." We have narrated from ʿAdī b. Ḥātim that he asked the Prophet ﷺ about his father, and he said: "Your father sought a matter and has attained it," meaning renown. We have narrated from Anas b. Mālik, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: "Allah does not wrong the believer in any good deed: he is rewarded for it in this world and recompensed for it in the Hereafter. As for the disbeliever, he is given for his good deeds in this world, until when he reaches the Hereafter he has no good deed left for which to be given any good."
