أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعْدٍ الْمَالِينِيُّ، حدثنا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَبِي الْحُسَيْنِ الْعَسْكَرِيُّ، حدثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَامِرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ صَدَقَةَ الْحَمَّالُ
قَالَ: كُنْتُ مَعَ ذِي النُّونِ بِأَخْمِيمَ فَسَمِعَ صَوْتَ لَهْوٍ وَدِفَافٌ وَإِكْبَارٍ فَقَالَ: " مَا هَذَا؟ " فَقِيلَ عُرْسٌ لِبَعْضِ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ، وَسَمِعَ إِلَى جَانِبِهِ بُكَاءً وَصِيَاحًا وَوَلْوَلَةً فَقَالَ: " مَا هَذَا؟ " فَقِيلَ: فُلَانٌ مَاتَ، فَقَالَ لِي: " يَا عُمَرَ بْنَ صَدَقَةَ أَعْطُوا هَؤُلَاءِ فَمَا شَكَرُوا، وَابْتَلُوا هَؤُلَاءِ فَمَا صَبَرُوا، وَلِلَّهِ عَلَيَّ إِنْ بِتُّ فِي هَذِهِ الْمَدِينَةِ " فَخَرَجَ مِنْ سَاعَتِهِ مِنْ إِخْمِيمَ إِلَى الْفُسْطَاطِ

Ṣadaqah, these were given, yet they did not give thanks; and those were tried, yet they did not endure patiently. By God, I owe it to Him [as a vow] if I spend the night in this city." So he left at that very hour from Akhmīm for al-Fusṭāṭ.
