He said: The Prophet ﷺ said: "I was given the seven long surahs in place of the Torah, the hundreds (al-miʾīn) in place of the Psalms, the oft-repeated (al-mathānī) in place of the Gospel, and I was favored with the mufaṣṣal." Al-Bayhaqī, may God have mercy on him, said: "The most likely meaning of the 'seven' in this hadith is the seven long surahs; the hundreds (al-miʾīn) are every surah that reaches a hundred verses or more; and the oft-repeated (al-mathānī) is every surah of fewer than two hundred verses and above the mufaṣṣal. This is indicated by the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās when he said to ʿUthmān: What moved you to do this against me, that you went to Surah Barāʾah, which is among the hundreds, and to al-Anfāl, which is among the oft-repeated, and joined them together? And he mentioned the hadith. It is also likely that the oft-repeated (al-mathānī) means the Opening of the Book (al-Fātiḥah), and before this we have narrated from the Prophet ﷺ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, what indicates that."
