He said: "I prayed with the Prophet ﷺ, and he began Sūrat al-Baqarah. I said: He will pray with it in one rakʿah. Then he went on, and I said: He will bow with it. Then he began al-Nisāʾ and recited it, then he began Āl ʿImrān and recited it. He recited slowly; when he passed a verse containing glorification, he glorified; when he passed a request, he asked; and when he passed a verse of seeking refuge, he sought refuge. Then he bowed" and said: "Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty," and his bowing was about as long as his standing. Then he said: "Allah hears whoever praises Him." Then he stood for about as long as he had bowed. Then he prostrated" and said: "Glory be to my Lord, the Most High," and his prostration was close to his standing in length. And we have narrated from ʿAwf b. Mālik al-Ashjaʿī, who said: "I stood with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night. He stood and recited Sūrat al-Baqarah. He did not pass a verse of mercy except that he stopped and asked, and he did not pass a verse of punishment except that he stopped and sought refuge."
