He said: The first one to speak about the divine decree (qadar) was Maʿbad al-Juhanī in Basra. He said: So Humayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥimyarī and I set out as pilgrims. When we came to Medina, we met ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar while he was in the mosque. I said: O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, there are people among us who recite the Quran and pursue knowledge, and they say: There is no decree, and the matter is only newly begun. He said: When you meet those people, tell them that I am free of them and that they are free of me. By the One by whom ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar swears, if one of them had gold the like of Uḥud and spent it, Allah would not accept it from him until he believes in the decree, all of it, its good and its evil. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me, saying: While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man appeared before us whose clothes were intensely white and whose hair was intensely black. No trace of travel was seen on him, and none of us knew him, until he sat down before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He rested his knees against his knees, placed his palms on his thighs, and then said: O Muḥammad, tell me about faith. What is faith? He said: "Faith is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the decree, its good and its evil." He said: You have spoken truly. And he mentioned the hadith. Muslim recorded it in his Ṣaḥīḥ by another route from Kahmas.

machine translationYazīd b. Zurayʿ also narrated it from Kahmas, and he said in the hadith: "That you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and in the decree, its good and its evil, its sweet and its bitter, and in the resurrection after death." He said: You have spoken truly.
