I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "I have five names: I am Muhammad, and I am Aḥmad, and I am al-Māḥī (the Eraser), through whom God erases disbelief, and I am al-Ḥāshir (the Gatherer), at whose feet the people will be gathered, and I am al-ʿĀqib (the Last to Follow), and al-ʿĀqib is the one after whom there is no prophet."

machine translationAl-Bukhārī narrated it in the Ṣaḥīḥ from Abū l-Yamān, and Muslim narrated it from ʿAbd b. Ḥumayd, from Abū l-Yamān. Muslim also reported it from the hadith of Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, in which he said: I said to al-Zuhrī: What is al-ʿĀqib? He said: "The one after whom there is no prophet." Abū l-Ḥusayn b. Bishrān informed us: Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad al-Ṣaffār informed us: Aḥmad b. Manṣūr al-Ramādī narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us: Maʿmar informed us, from al-Zuhrī, and he mentioned it with its chain, the same, except that he said: "disbelief (al-kufr)." Yūnus b. Yazīd also narrated it from al-Zuhrī, and in it is this addition: And God has named him compassionate and merciful. It is likely that this was from the words of al-Zuhrī. ʿUqbah b. Muslim narrated it from Nāfiʿ b. Jubayr b. Muṭʿim that he entered upon ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, and ʿAbd al-Malik said to him: Can you enumerate the names of the Messenger of God ﷺ that Jubayr b. Muṭʿim used to count? He said: Yes, they are six: Muḥammad, Aḥmad, Khātam, Ḥāshir, ʿĀqib, and Māḥī. As for Ḥāshir, he was sent along with the Hour as a warner to you before a severe punishment. As for ʿĀqib, he is the one who followed after the prophets. As for Māḥī, God, Mighty and Majestic, erased through him the sins of those who followed him. 1335 - ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbdān informed us: Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Maḥmawayh informed us: Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad narrated to us: Ādam narrated to us: al-Layth b. Saʿd narrated to us, from Khālid b. Yazīd, from Saʿīd b. Abī Hilāl, from ʿUtbah b. Muslim, and he mentioned it.
