أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعْدٍ الزَّاهِدُ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَحْمَدَ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ الشَّافِعِيَّ، بِبَغْدَادَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ سَعِيدٍ الْفِرْيَابِيَّ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ الْمُسَيَّبَ بْنَ مُسْلِمٍ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ عَمِيرَةَ بْنَ عِصْمَةَ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ أَحْمَدَ بْنَ صَالِحٍ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ مُعَاذٍ،
يَقُولُ: " إِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ يَكُونَ، تَوْحِيدٌ لَمْ يَعْجَزْ عَنْ هَدْمِ مَا قَبْلَهُ مِنْ كُفْرٍ، لَا يَعْجَزُ عَنْ مَحْوِ مَا بَعْدَهُ مِنْ ذَنْبٍ " فَصْلٌ. قَالَ الْبَيْهَقِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ: " وَكَمَا لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ الْخَوْفُ إِلَّا مِنَ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ كَذَلِكَ لَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ الرَّجَاءُ إِلَّا مِنْهُ؛ لِأَنَّهُ لَا يَمْلِكُ أَحَدٌ مِنْ دُونِهِ ضَرًّا وَلَا نَفْعًا، فَمَنْ رَجَا مِمَّنْ لَا يَمْلِكُ مَا لَا يَمْلِكُ فَهُوَ مِنَ الْجَاهِلِينَ "
