He said: Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (may God be pleased with him) addressed us. He praised God and extolled Him as He deserves, then said: "I advise you to have fear of God (taqwā), and to praise Him as He deserves, and to mix hope with fear. For God, Mighty and Majestic, praised Zakariyyā and his household, and said: {إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ وَيَدْعُونَنَا رَغَبًا وَرَهَبًا وَكَانُوا لَنَا خَاشِعِينَ} [al-Anbiyāʾ: 90]. Then know, servants of God, that God has taken your souls in pledge for His right, and has taken your covenants upon that, and has bought from you the little that perishes for the much that remains. And this is the Book of God among you: its light is not extinguished and its wonders do not end. So seek light by its light, take the Book as your counsel, and seek illumination from it for the Day of darkness. For He created you only to worship Him, and appointed over you noble recorders who know what you do. Then know, servants of God, that you go out in the morning and return in the evening within a term whose knowledge has been hidden from you. So if you are able to have your terms end while you are engaged in the work of God, do so, and you will not be able to do that except through God. So compete within the respite of your terms before your terms run out and return you to the worst of your deeds. For there are people who made their lifespans for others and forgot themselves; I forbid you to be like them. Hurry, hurry! Then flee to safety, flee to safety! For behind you is a swift pursuer whose passing is quick."
