أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ وَهُوَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الزُّهْرِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ §جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ بِبُرْدَةٍ فَقَالَ

سَهْلٌ هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا الْبُرْدَةُ؟ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ هَذِهِ الشَّمْلَةُ مَنْسُوجٌ فِي حَاشِيَتِهَا فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي نَسَجْتُ هَذِهِ بِيَدِي أَكْسُوكَهَا فَأَخَذَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مُحْتَاجًا إِلَيْهَا فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا وَإِنَّهَا لَإِزَارُهُ فَجَسَّهَا رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اكْسُنِيهَا قَالَ «نَعَمْ» فَجَلَسَ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَطَوَاهَا ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ بِهَا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْقَوْمُ مَا أَحْسَنْتَ سَأَلْتَهَا إِيَّاهُ وَقَدْ عَرَفْتَ أَنَّهُ لَا يَرُدُّ سَائِلًا فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ وَاللهِ مَا سَأَلْتُهَا إِلَّا لِتَكُونَ كَفَنِي يَوْمَ أَمُوتُ قَالَ سَهْلٌ فَكَانَتْ كَفَنَهُ

✧ Sahl said: “Do you know what a burdah is?” We said, “Yes, it is this shumlah with a fringe woven into its border.” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, I wove this with my own hands to clothe you with it.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it, needing it, and came out to us wearing it as his waist-wrapper. A man from the group felt it and said, “O Messenger of Allah, clothe me with it.” He said, “Yes.” He sat in the gathering as long as Allah willed, then returned, folded it, and sent it to him. The people said to the man, “You did not do well. You asked him for it when you knew he does not turn away a beggar.” The man said, “By Allah, I asked for it only so that it would be my shroud on the day I die.” Sahl said, “And it was his shroud.”
