أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ كَيْسَانَ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَأَدْفَعَنَّ الْيَوْمَ الرَّايَةَ إِلَى رَجُلٍ يُحِبُّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَيُحِبُّهُ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ» فَتَطَاوَلَ الْقَوْمُ فَقَالَ «أَيْنَ عَلِيٌّ؟» فَقَالُوا يَشْتَكِي عَيْنَيْهِ قَالَ «فَبَصَقَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ فِي كَفَّيْهِ وَمَسَحَ بِهَا عَيْنَيْ عَلِيٍّ وَدَفَعَ إِلَيْهِ الرَّايَةَ فَفَتَحَ اللهُ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ»

Translation

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said: «I will surely hand the banner today to a man who loves God and His Messenger, and whom God and His Messenger love.» The people craned their necks, and he said: «Where is Ali?» They said: 'He is complaining of pain in his eyes.' He said: 'The Prophet of God ﷺ spat in his palms and wiped them over Ali's eyes, and handed him the banner, and God granted victory at his hands.'
