✧ Asma’ bint ‘Umays entered upon Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, to visit her. She had earlier migrated to the Negus among those who migrated to him. ‘Umar entered upon Hafsah while Asma’ was with her. When ‘Umar saw Asma’, he said, “Who is this?” She said, “Asma’ bint ‘Umays.” ‘Umar said, “This Abyssinian, this sea-voyager?” Asma’ said, “Yes.” ‘Umar said, “We preceded you in migration, so we are more entitled to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than you.” She became angry and said, “No, by Allah! You were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he fed your hungry and admonished your ignorant, while we were in the land of enemies and those who hated us, in Abyssinia—and that was for the sake of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. By Allah, I will not eat any food or drink any drink until I mention what you said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We were being harmed and were afraid, so I will mention that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, I will not lie or add to it.” When the Prophet ﷺ came, she said, “O Prophet of Allah, ‘Umar said such-and-such.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “What did you say?” She said, “I said such-and-such.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “He is not more entitled to me than you. For him and his companions there is one migration, but for you, the people of the ship, there are two migrations.” She said, “I saw Abu Musa ؓ and the people of the ship coming to me in groups, asking about this hadith. There was nothing in this world that pleased them more or was greater in their own estimation than what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them.” Abu Burdah said: Asma’ said, “I saw Abu Musa, and he would ask me to repeat this hadith.”
