أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا قَاسِمٌ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ صِلَةَ بْنِ زُفَرَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ
«إِنَّ الْعَاقِبَ وَالسَّيِّدَ صَاحِبَيْ نَجْرَانَ أَتَيَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَرَادَا أَنْ يُلَاعِنَاهُ» فَقَالَ «أَحَدُهُمَا لَا تُلَاعِنْهُ فَوَاللهِ لَئِنْ كَانَ نَبِيًّا لَعَلَّنَا لَا نُفْلِحُ وَلَا عَقِبُنَا مِنْ بَعْدِنَا» قَالَا لَهُ نُعْطِيكَ مَا سَأَلْتَ فَابْعَثْ مَعَنَا رَجُلًا أَمِينًا حَقَّ أَمِينٍ فَاسْتَشْرَفَ لَهَا أَصْحَابُ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ قَالَ قُمْ يَا أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ فَلَمَّا قَفَّى قَالَ «هَذَا أَمِينُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ»

✧ "Al-Aqib and al-Sayyid, the two leaders of Najran, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and wanted him to invoke mutual curse with them." One of them said: "Do not invoke mutual curse with him, for by Allah, if he is a prophet, we will not prosper, nor will our descendants after us." They said to him: "We will give you what you ask, so send with us a trustworthy man, truly trustworthy." The companions of Muhammad ﷺ looked forward to it. He said: "Stand, O Abu Ubaidah b. al-Jarrah." When he turned away, he said: "This is the trustworthy one of this Ummah."
