✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ often used to say to his companions: "Has any of you seen a dream?" So they would narrate to him whatever Allah willed. He said: One morning he said to us: "Last night two beings came to me. They sent me and said to me, 'Go.' So I went with them. We came upon a man lying down, and another standing over him with a rock. He was throwing the rock at his head, smashing it. The stone would roll away, and he would follow it and take it. By the time he returned, his head had healed as it was before. Then he would go back to him and do the same as the first time. I said to them: 'Glory be to Allah! What are these two?' They said: 'Go on, go on.' So I went on. We came upon a man lying on his back, and another standing over him with an iron hook. He would come to one side of his face and tear his mouth corner to the back of his neck, then his eye to the back of his neck, and his nostril to the back of his neck. Then he would turn to the other side and do the same as the first time. I said: 'Glory be to Allah! What is this?' They said: 'Go on, go on.' So we went on. We came upon something like a tannur oven. We looked inside and saw naked men and women. Flames were coming at them from below, and whenever the flames came to them, they screamed. I said: 'What are these?' They said: 'Go on, go on.' So I went on. We came upon a river. In the river was a man swimming, and on the bank was a man who had gathered many stones. Whenever the swimmer swam a while, he would come to the one who had gathered the stones, open his mouth, and the man would put a stone in it. I said: 'What are these two?' They said: 'Go on, go on.' So we went on. We came upon a man of ugly appearance, the ugliest man you could ever see. He was by a fire, stoking it and walking around it. I said: 'What is this?' They said: 'Go on, go on.' So we went on. We came upon a garden. In the middle of the garden was a tall man, so tall I could hardly see his head in the sky. Around him were the most numerous children I had ever seen. Then we went on. We came upon a huge tree, the largest and most beautiful I had ever seen. They said: 'Climb it.' So we climbed and reached a city built of bricks of gold and silver. We came to the gate and asked for it to be opened. It was opened and we entered. There we met men, half of them the most handsome you could ever see and half the ugliest. They said to them: 'Go and plunge into that river.' There was a river flowing across, its water pure white. They went and plunged in, then returned to us with the ugliness gone and in the best of forms. They said to me: 'This is the Garden of Eden, and that is your dwelling.' I said: 'May Allah bless you both, let me enter it.' They said: 'Not now, but you will enter it.' I said: 'I have seen wonders tonight. What is this that I saw?' They said: 'We will surely tell you. The first man you came to whose head was being smashed with a rock is the man who learns the Quran and sleeps through the obligatory prayer. The man whose mouth corner was being torn to the back of his neck, and his eye and nostril to the back of his neck, is the man who leaves his house and tells a lie that reaches the horizons. The naked men and women in something like a tannur are the adulterers and adulteresses. The man in the river who was swimming and having stones put in his mouth is the one who consumes usury. The ugly man at the gate is Malik, the keeper of Hell. The tall man in the garden is Ibrahim. The children around him are every newborn who died upon the fitrah.' Some of the Muslims said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what about the children of the polytheists?' He said: 'And the children of the polytheists. As for the people half of whom were ugly, they are people who mixed good deeds with bad ones, and Allah overlooked them.'"
