✧ The position of the hands when sitting for the first Tashahhud

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ كُلَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ وَائِلِ بْنِ حُجْرٍ قَالَ

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يَرْفَعُ يَدَيْهِ إِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلَاةَ حَتَّى يُحَاذِي مَنْكِبَيْهِ وَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَرْكَعَ وَإِذَا جَلَسَ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ أَضْجَعَ الْيُسْرَى وَنَصَبَ الْيُمْنَى وَوُضِعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى فَخِذِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَنَصَبَ إصْبُعَهُ الدَّعَّاءَةَ وَوُضِعَ يَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى رِجْلِهِ الْيُسْرَى قَالَ «ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُمْ مِنْ قَابِلٍ فَرَأَيْتُهُمْ يَرْفَعُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ فِي الْبَرَانِسِ»

Translation

✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and saw him raising his hands when he began the prayer until they were level with his shoulders, and when he wanted to bow. And when he sat in the two rak‘ahs, he laid down his left [foot] and kept his right [foot] upright, placed his right hand on his right thigh, kept his index finger raised, and placed his left hand on his left leg. He said: “Then I came to them the following year and saw them raising their hands in their burnooses.”
