أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ أَسَدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ طَاوُسٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ قَالَ

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ هَذَا سَرَقَ خَمِيصَةً لِي لِرَجُلٍ مَعَهُ فَأَمَرَ بِقَطْعِهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبْتُهَا لَهُ قَالَ «فَهَلَّا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي بِهِ»

✧ I said, "O Messenger of Allah, this man stole a cloak of mine belonging to a man who is with me." He ordered his hand to be cut off. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have given it to him as a gift." He said, "Why not before you brought him to me?"
