أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْعَلَاءِ الْكُوفِيَّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَشْعَثُ هُوَ ابْنُ سَوَّارٍ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ
كَانَ صَفْوَانُ نَائِمًا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَرِدَاؤُهُ تَحْتَهُ فَسُرِقَ فَقَامَ وَقَدْ ذَهَبَ الرَّجُلُ فَأَدْرَكَهُ فَأَخَذَهُ فَجَاءَ بِهِ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَمَرَ بِقَطْعِهِ قَالَ صَفْوَانُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا بَلَغَ رِدَائِي أَنْ يُقْطَعَ فِيهِ رَجُلٌ قَالَ «فَهَلَّا كَانَ هَذَا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَأْتِينَا بِهِ؟»
Translation
Chain of narrators

✧ Safwan was sleeping in the mosque with his cloak beneath him, and it was stolen. He got up, but the man had gone, so he caught up with him and seized him, and brought him to the Prophet ﷺ, who ordered his hand to be cut off. Safwan said, "O Messenger of Allah, my cloak is not worth a man's hand being cut off for it." He said, "Why was this not before you brought him to us?"
