أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ يَحْيَى عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ نُعَيْمٍ عَنْ جَدِّهِ هَزَّالٍ أَنَّهُ كَانَ أَمَرَ مَاعِزًا

أَنْ يَأْتِيَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَيُخْبِرَهُ بِحَدِيثِهِ فَأَتَى مَاعِزٌ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ يُرَدِّدُ ذَلِكَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَبَعَثَ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ فَسَأَلَهُمْ أَبِهِ جُنُونٌ؟ قَالُوا لَا فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ أَثَيِّبٌ أَمْ بِكْرٌ قَالُوا ثَيِّبٌ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَرُجِمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا هَزَّالُ لَوْ سَتَرْتَهُ كَانَ خَيْرًا لَكَ»

✧ He should go to the Prophet ﷺ and tell him his story. So Ma'iz came and told him, but he turned away from him while he kept repeating it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He sent to his people and asked them, “Is there any madness in him?” They said, “No.” He asked about him, “Is he a previously married man or a virgin?” They said, “A previously married man.” So he ordered him to be stoned. Then he said, “O Hazzal, if you had concealed him, it would have been better for you.”
