أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ نُعَيْمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

جَاءَ مَاعِزُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي زَنَيْتُ فَأَقِمْ عَلَيَّ كِتَابَ اللهِ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ إِنِّي زَنَيْتُ فَأَقِمْ فِيَّ كِتَابَ اللهِ حَتَّى جَاءَ أَرْبَعَ مَرَّاتٍ فَقَالَ «اذْهَبُوا بِهِ فَارْجُمُوهُ» فَلَمَّا مَسَّتْهُ الْحِجَارَةُ جَمَزَ فَاشْتَدَّ فَخَرَجَ عَبْدُ اللهِ مِنْ بَادِيَتِهِ فَرَمَاهُ بِوَظِيفِ حِمَارٍ فَصَرَعَهُ فَرَمَاهُ النَّاسُ حَتَّى قَتَلُوهُ فَذُكِرَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِرَارَهُ فَقَالَ «هَلَّا تَرَكْتُمُوهُ لَعَلَّهُ يَتُوبُ فَيَتُوبَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ؟»

✧ Ma‘iz b. Malik came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery, so carry out the Book of Allah upon me.” He turned away from him. Then he said to him, “I have committed adultery, so carry out the Book of Allah upon me,” until he came four times. He said, “Take him and stone him.” When the stones touched him, he ran swiftly. ‘Abdullah came out from his desert and threw at him the leg bone of a donkey, knocking him down. The people threw at him until they killed him. His flight was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, “Why did you not leave him? Perhaps he would repent and Allah would accept his repentance.”
